Virtual Reality Manufacturing Technology Provides A New Lens For Benchmarking

We unleashed the power of Virtual Tours & Digital Twins to create a fully interactive VR application that showcases the manufacturing plants for Magna's international employees.

The use of Virtual reality manufacturing technology has been helpful for Magna International in the process of continuous improvements and standardization. A good example of proper use of this VR technology is to give employees full plant site tours without having to fly them over to other locations.

In a competitive environment like automotive manufacturing, benchmarking performance of facilities is critical to achieving operational excellence and remaining cost-competitive. However, for a large enterprise like Magna International with 328 plants globally, standardizing process improvements across its global footprint can be challenging. Virtual reality (VR) manufacturing technology has helped Magna International engage in continuous process improvements and standardization through virtual site visits. For example, instead of absorbing the costs of flying employees to different plant sites, Magna International uses Samsung Gear VR headsets to facilitate remote tours of its plants. This saves the company time, resources and the cost of travel, while allowing employees to be trained as if they were on site.

Beyond training, the use of VR manufacturing technology also allows Magna to identify areas for improvement, develop standardized processes and metrics, and enable predictive maintenance in a cost-effective and resource efficient manner. Thus, the company stays ahead of the curve in the race to modernize the twenty-first century factory.

The Road to the Smart Factory

Wearable technology is allowing Magna to start the process of creating a smart factory. Samsung Electronics in partnership with GeniusXR worked closely with the Magna team to bring wearable technologies to Magna's employees.

Read the full Case Study on Samsung Insights Samsung worked closely with Magna to create a comprehensive enterprise solution that would not only provide them with real-time information about their factory environment, but also allow them to take the first step toward becoming a smart factory. The end-to-end solution uses Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches, tablets and 55-in. TVs around the facility. Tablets are used to send alerts to maintenance personnel on smartwatches when issues arise, while TVs display reporting and analytics on critical factory metrics, like mean time to repair. With improved factory intelligence from wearables in manufacturing, Magna can more easily identify areas of waste and react faster to issues.
